Swimming coaching in Cyprus

Most adults who say they cannot swim can, in fact, swim: badly, and only for about fifty metres. That is a technique problem, not a fitness problem, and it is fixable at any age. Coaching runs in the pool and in the sea, for complete beginners through to swimmers chasing a time.

Technique first, distance afterwards

Swimming is the one endurance sport where working harder can make you slower. Water is roughly eight hundred times denser than air, so almost everything that decides your speed happens before propulsion does: how flat you lie, where your head sits, whether your hand slips or holds. A swimmer with poor position who trains more gets tired faster.

So sessions start with the parts most people skip. Body position, breathing on both sides, a catch that anchors, and a kick that stabilises rather than thrashes. Beginners spend real time on the basics; experienced swimmers usually find the basics are exactly what has been quietly costing them.

  • Complete beginners: adults who never learned, or learned badly as a child and have avoided it since. Confidence in deep water comes first; strokes come after.
  • Improvers: you can swim a length but not five, and you are not sure whether the problem is fitness or form. Usually it is form.
  • Triathletes and open-water swimmers: sighting, swimming straight without a black line, starts in a crowd, and pacing a swim so the bike is still rideable afterwards.
  • Juniors: taught the same way and in the same order, with rather more games in it. See youth coaching.

The pool and the sea are two different sports

A swimmer who is comfortable doing sixty lengths can still be badly caught out on their first open-water morning, and it is rarely fitness that does it. There is no line to follow, no wall to push off, no rest every twenty-five metres, and the water moves. All of that is learnable, but it has to be learned in the sea rather than assumed.

  • Sighting without wrecking your position: lifting the eyes to find a marker is the single most common place a good pool stroke falls apart.
  • Swimming straight: most people track steadily to one side and add distance they never see on a watch.
  • Chop, swell and other swimmers: breathing to the sheltered side, and staying calm when contact happens at the start.
  • Getting in and out: entries and exits off a beach, which in a race is where time is lost cheaply.

Cyprus is an unusually forgiving place to learn this. The sea off this coast is warm enough to swim in for most of the year and clear enough to see the bottom, which removes the two things beginners find hardest about open water.

How the coaching works

  • 1-to-1, or a small group. Beginners and anyone rebuilding a stroke get more out of 1-to-1; swimmers who already train usually prefer the group.
  • You are watched, not just counted. Corrections happen in the session, while the stroke is still in your body, not from a spreadsheet afterwards.
  • Sessions are written down. If you swim without a coach during the week, you get something to swim rather than lengths to accumulate.
  • It fits around the rest of your training. If you are also cycling or running, the swim is planned as part of that load rather than on top of it. See triathlon coaching.

Ramo has coached for twenty-five years across cycling, swimming and triathlon, and swims open water himself off this coast. Plans, session structure and what each option costs are on the coaching page.
